AO Arts Warehouse
524 East Main Street
Stoughton, WI 53589
AO Arts Warehouse is an arts facility that is home to Abel Contemporary Gallery as well as six artist studios serving the greater Madison area in Stoughton Wisconsin. This historic tobacco warehouse is owned by artists Theresa Abel and Tim O’Neill who have been active in the Madison arts community for decades and owners of Abel Contemporary gallery since 2004.
In 2018, Abel and O’Neill, having lost their lease in the gallery’s former home in Paoli, WI found a historic tobacco warehouse for sale in the city of Stoughton. This large new space would allow them to continue current programming, maintain their large stable of artists, and continue the growth of the gallery. The distinct building complemented the contemporary art and point of view of the gallery.
Located at 524 East Main street, the warehouse was built in the late 1800’s with a beautiful brick exterior, post and beam construction, soaring ceilings, and original wood plank floors and walls.
In this new space, Abel and O’Neill also were able to offer affordable artist studios for rent. The new space was designed by Reddymade Architecture and Design in NYC, and made possible by the countless volunteer hours artists, friends, collectors, and members of the local community. Abel Contemporary opened to the public in its current location in May of 2019 and hosts three concurrent exhibitions rotating seven times a year: a solo show, a group show, and a separate gallery space intended to feature more experimental artwork. This new space is called no.5 to pay homage to the history of the building as the no.5 tobacco warehouse.
